Chapter Thirty
July 24th, 2020
Friday
The next afternoon, Sarah gives Vincent a death glare from across the lab. He writes on the board throughout the morning, pretending to be entranced by the math. The morning was a little strange, however, as he felt Mavisâs negative attitude toward the rest of the shop spilling over to him as well. After working through lunch, he comes to have a âmiraculous breakthrough.â
âGuys, I think I got it.â
Mavis approaches, reads over the board, and shrugs. âYou think this is it?â
He replaces the cap on his marker and steps back to admire his work. âNo⦠I know it is.â Sarah rolls her eyes. Mavis tries to have the rest of the lab check his work, but itâs so far above everybody elseâs heads that they just smile, nod, and agree.
âSplendid. As long as youâre confident, Vincent, we can go ahead and schedule our next test for Monday.â She smiles at him, then dismisses everybody for the day.
Vincent packs up and leaves as quickly as possible. He takes the first elevator down to the west wing entrance and sees Sarah hurrying to catch the same elevator, but he lets the door close in front of her. As he gets out, he tries to hide in the cafeteria, but Sarah eventually finds him in the Quiet Room. Taking a seat across from him, she says nothing.
âWhat do you want?â Vincent finally asks.
âIâm proud of you.â
âOkay.â He shrugs and watches the bowl of macaroni and cheese that he hastily picked up from the food carts.
âI just wanted to say thank you. For telling her the truth.â
âWell, you did.â It pains him to shut her out like this, but he canât have her asking more questions. She frowns at him, then quietly leaves.
